I doubt we’ll hear much about it here, because people might think what Iceland did is a better solution than whatever turd sandwich we get in a “grand bargain”. (Likewise, we’ve heard only a little about how austerity isn’t working too well in the EU, and of that, only recently.)

Because y’all don’t watch BBC World News.

Coincidentally, the Climate Desk is hosting its second Climate Desk Live event, featuring Kevin Knobloch—the president of the Union of Concerned Scientists and an expert on climate—and Mike Castle, the former governor of Delaware and a nine-term Republican congressman from the state. You can watch them talk about the question of the day—In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, to what extent can science, and climate science in particular, shape US policy?—right here.

Aurora borealis, Churchill, score by Jim O’Rourke. Can’t go wrong:

A short documentary film contrasting the Northern Lights with decaying manmade debris littered throughout the landscape surrounding the town of Churchill, Manitoba in Canada’s Arctic. The film touches on the regenerative power of nature and the futility of mankind’s struggle against natural processes of decay. Featuring an original score by Jim O’Rourke (Sonic Youth, Wilco) a voice-over by Will Oldham (Matewan, Old Joy) and likely some of the best footage of the aurora borealis ever captured.

Ten years have passed since Matt Wilson was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s disease but he is still earning a living in the sport he loves. He clips his feet into the pedals, fills his lungs and prepares for the searing pain about to swamp his body. The moment arrives and he kicks down the ramp and you are struck by the muted response. “Few of the thousands lining the route have ever heard of him. The messages of hope they chalk on the route do not bear his name. The portrait on the billboard ‘Hope Rides Again’ is not his face. Why not? Is he not living strong? Does he not inspire hope? What is the difference between Matt Wilson and Lance Armstrong?””

- From the best piece yet on the whole Lance situation. Thoughtful, funny, well written.

In a diversion from goats, and caramels, and farming, and a rewind to a previous time of art and politics… I am incredibly humbled and proud to say my work from the Tar Sands in Alberta - the Last Arctic - is being included in a show at the Mendel Museum in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan & curated by Jen Budney. The work was first shown at Anthony Greaney in the spring of 2009 and reviewed in the Boston Globe and I kept an exhaustive blog on my research. Im thrilled to see it take on a new life and to have my photos in a show with Edward Burtynsky, who has always been an inspiration. I wish I could be there for the opening tonight to see what looks to be an incredible collection made in response to the petroleum industry.

Also. If you watch the video. That noise you hear - they are bird decoys, trying to scare off migrating birds from landing in those toxic tailing ponds.
