Alice’s Restaurant Massacree - Arlo Guthrie

For as far back as I can remember, every Thanksgiving one of the local FM radio stations would play “Alice’s Restaurant” in its entirety - all 18+ minutes of it - several times throughout the day. My family would time the drive to my gramma’s with the song’s start. As traditions go, it was a fine one.

It’s an incredible piece of art. If you’ve never heard it, please do yourself a favor and fill your plate, sit down, and let this track spin.

A gunman shot and killed a man on Lorimer Street between Ten Eyck and Maujer streets this afternoon, apparently after a car chase. A passerby who happened upon the aftermath of the slaying — which occurred at around 2:30 pm — had this to say: “There was a fight, then someone got shot. UPS man witnessed the incident and the UPS truck is part of the crime scene. Don’t know anything else, except saw cops try to revive the victim, who was bleeding from the back, pumped his chest, etc. as he was led into the ambulance.”

Another source had more information about the crime—which seems to have been classified as a homicide after the victim was pronounced dead on arrival at Woodhull Hospital according to reports coming across the police scanner:

“I live right across from the accident, but didn’t hear anything until the first responders came. Apparently one man (possibly older looking, mob-ish) was chasing another man both in their cars. There was a car crash and the man being chased jumped out and was shot by the chaser. The shot man then ran for cover in a UPS truck parked in front of a mailing place. Again, these details were all overheard, so I don’t know the truth to it all, but there’s a lot of activity here and I thought you would want to know.”

NYPD’s press office said it has not yet received any further information on the crime.

Firstly, I basically live (and work!) above Manna, and I heard nothing.

Secondly, what is Neighborhoodr actually supposed to be? This is a blatant rip-off of the Gothamist piece… paraphrased (barely), but basically the exact same copy. Happy the “Community Moderator” linked back to the original piece, but why not just block quote the whole thing and attribute it honestly?

Finally, that “mailing place” is called “Tiger Lilly” and the bro in there will hook you up with stamps any time. Super chill.

between 2 weeks of mind-numbing UN negotiations at the Bangkok climate talks, a truly inspiring weekend of action, youth workshops, marches and rallies. hundreds of amazing young climate leaders from across southeast Asia. huge props to 350.org, TckTckTck.org, and everyone else involved. some proud and inspiring moments amidst the tedium of international negotiations.

(and i hope that uplifting climate activism videos are exempt from blake’s sigur ros soundtrack moratorium)

During the 2004 Cape Farewell expedition Alex Hartley began the work Nymark (Undiscovered Island), an artwork documenting the process of finding and naming a new island; an island only uncovered in recent years due to the retreating glaciers. The work is currently touring with the Cape Farewell: Art & Climate Change exhibition in collaboration with Barbican International Entreprises.

The island will be transposed onto a floating platform, and brought to the UK via International Waters. Whilst outside national seas, the island will become nowhereisland and will declare itself a new micronation.

The is an incredible project that I’ve been following for a few years. My friend Ben Jervey went on the Cape Farewell expedition a few years ago and he had an incredible trip. Very interesting stuff.

and as a formal “citizen” of nowhereisland, i’m talking with Hartley about how to possibly float it across the pond.
